Das Wichtigste in Kürze
- Implant survival rate after 10 years: 94–96% (Pjetursson et al. 2022) — but survival ≠ success.
- Peri-implantitis affects approx. 22% of all implant patients after 10 years — early detection is crucial.
- Digital probing: computer-assisted measurement of pocket depths and comparison over years — detects changes before clinical symptoms.
- DVT recall: 3D X-ray detects bone loss from 0.5 mm — conventional X-ray only from 2 mm.
- Recall interval: every 6 months (standard patients) or every 3 months (high-risk patients).
- Ask: 'Do you use digital probing for follow-up care?' and 'When do you recommend a DVT check?'
A dental implant is a long-term investment — but how long does it really last, and what determines this? The answer is clearer than many think: not the implant brand, but the quality of follow-up care is the most important long-term factor. This article shows what current studies say about implant long-term success — and how digital diagnostics have fundamentally changed follow-up care.
What the studies actually say: Long-term data overview
Digital follow-up care: Early detection with precision
Digital probing
Computer-assisted measurement of peri-implant pocket depths at 6 measurement points per implant. Automatic documentation and longitudinal comparison over years. Detects pocket deepening of 0.5 mm — clinically relevant changes become visible before symptoms appear.
DVT recall
3D X-ray check to measure the peri-implant bone level. DVT detects bone loss from 0.5 mm — conventional 2D X-ray only from 2 mm. Recommended after 1 year (baseline) and then every 3–5 years or when clinically indicated.
Fluorescence diagnostics
Biofilm visualisation through fluorescence light. Makes bacterial deposits visible that are not recognisable with the naked eye — including in hard-to-reach areas around the implant.
Long-term success is plannable — with the right follow-up care
The evidence is clear: implants last 15–25 years and longer — if follow-up care is right. Digital diagnostics (digital probing, DVT recall, fluorescence diagnostics) have fundamentally improved early detection of peri-implantitis. Ask your dentist explicitly: "Do you use digital probing for follow-up care?" and "When do you recommend a DVT check?" — a reputable implantologist has a clear answer.
