A treatment and cost plan (THP) is a binding document that your dentist must issue before any major treatment. It lists all planned procedures, materials, and costs — broken down by insurance coverage and patient cost. It protects you as a patient from unexpected costs and gives you the opportunity to obtain a second opinion.

No. You do not have to sign a THP and can obtain a second opinion at any time. Sign only when you understand all items. By signing, you agree to the treatment plan and costs.

In Austria, a THP is mandatory for all major dental prosthetic treatments and implants before treatment begins. For simple fillings or routine checkups, no THP is required.

A THP is typically valid for 3 months. After that, it must be reissued as findings or prices may have changed.

Insurance coverage is the amount your health insurance covers. Patient cost is the amount you pay yourself — total costs minus insurance coverage. For implants, the patient cost is usually very high, as implants themselves are not covered by insurance.
