What is professional teeth whitening?

Professional teeth whitening is a controlled whitening procedure that removes discoloration in the enamel and dentin through oxidation with hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Unlike over-the-counter products, professional whitening uses higher concentrations of active ingredients under dental supervision.

There are two main methods: in-office whitening (at the practice, 60–90 minutes) and home whitening (custom-made trays for home use, 2–4 weeks). Both methods are safe and effective when applied correctly.

What patients should know

Whitening only works on natural teeth
Crowns, veneers, fillings and implants are not lightened by whitening. Existing restorations may appear discolored after treatment.
Pre-treatment: Professional cleaning is essential
Tartar and plaque must be removed before whitening. Otherwise uneven results will occur.
Sensitivity is normal and temporary
Many patients experience increased tooth sensitivity in the first 24–48 hours. This usually subsides quickly.
Results last 1–3 years
Depending on dietary habits and oral hygiene. Coffee, tea, red wine and nicotine accelerate re-staining.
Not suitable for active caries or periodontitis
Dental disease must be treated before whitening. Whitening on inflamed tissue can cause pain.
