Wisdom teeth removal Vienna – clinical presentation
1

When do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Wisdom teeth (third molars) often do not erupt completely or are positioned at an angle in the jaw. This can lead to pain, inflammation, caries on adjacent teeth, and jaw cysts. Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed — the indication depends on position, eruption status, and clinical symptoms.

A CBCT scan shows the exact position of the tooth in relation to the inferior alveolar nerve and helps assess the surgical risk realistically.

What patients should fundamentally know

Informed consent is your right
Every patient has the right to complete information about diagnosis, treatment options, risks, and costs — before consenting.
Ask about the treatment plan
A reputable dentist creates a written treatment plan with cost estimate before any major treatment.
Second opinions are legitimate
For major procedures or high costs, a second opinion is not only allowed but recommended.
Documentation is important
Keep all findings, X-rays, and cost estimates. You have the right to copies of your records.
3

Limitations and potential risks

Individual healing courses
Every patient responds differently to treatment. Predictions about results are always estimates.
Complications are possible
As with any medical procedure, unexpected complications can occur. Open communication with your provider is important.
Limitations of the method
Not every treatment is suitable for every patient. General medical conditions, medications, and anatomical variations can limit options.
Follow-up treatment may be necessary
In some cases, corrections or supplementary measures may be needed that cannot be fully planned in advance.
5

Possible alternatives

The recommended treatment is not always the only option. Discuss all available alternatives with your provider and their respective advantages and disadvantages.
